What does the Bible say about anxiety?
The Bible treats anxiety as real and as something to be handed over rather than suppressed. Philippians 4:6-7 instructs you to make the worry itself the content of your prayer, and promises peace as a guard around the heart and mind — not as a resolution of the situation. 1 Peter 5:7 says to cast your care on him because he cares for you, and Matthew 6:34 narrows the task to keeping anxiety inside the day it belongs to.
Anxiety is not treated as a failure of faith
This is the first thing worth saying, because the opposite is often implied. The Psalms include people who say plainly that they cannot sleep, that they are overwhelmed, that their heart is sore pained within them — and those prayers were preserved rather than edited. Psalm 94:19 speaks of a multitude of thoughts within me, which is a fair description of an anxious mind, and the response offered is comfort rather than correction.
The instruction is directional, not dismissive
Philippians 4:6 is frequently read as be careful for nothing, full stop. The verse continues: but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. The anxiety is not deleted; it is given a destination. Verse 7 then describes the peace of God keeping — garrisoning — your hearts and minds, which is protection during an unresolved situation rather than the situation resolving.
When it doesn't lift
Scripture does not promise that reading a verse ends an anxious episode. Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted, which is presence rather than removal. If anxiety is persistent, physical, or interfering with sleep, work, or relationships, that is a medical matter as well as a spiritual one, and Scripture has never been offered as a replacement for care from a doctor or counsellor.
